Camping in Salou
Steeped in history, Salou and the Costa Dorada offers today’s holidaymakers one of the best camping holiday destinations in Europe.
Salou is located towards the south of the Costa Dorada, just 10 minutes drive from Tarragona and 30 minutes from the region’s capital city of Barcelona. Both Reus and Barcelona airports serve the area.
The Iberians were the first to settle here, followed by the Romans, when the town was known as Salauris. The old port at the heart of Salou, was the point where King Jaume I of Aragon set sail with his Catalan army to conquer Majorca in 1229. Many years later, the town’s commercial popularity would end up making it the target of many pirate attacks.
Planning and construction work in early 20th century gave Salou the name of The Beach of Europe. And the then state-of-the-art Xalet Bonet building and others to the right on the seafront laid the foundations for present-day Salou. Salou has always been popular, the fine weather, facilities and transport links have all helped to make this town a hub for camping families to visit through the last 4 decades at least.
The opening of PortAventura in the mid-nineties, today attracting 4 million visitors, is one of Europe’s top theme parks. The park can be reached by train from Salou and Barcelona with relative ease.
