Camping in Fréjus
Nestled between the Esterel Mountains and the Mediterranean sea lies the historically-rich city of Fréjus. The city’s foundations go back to the Celtic-Ligurian period of occupation pre-120 BC, but it was the Roman’s who left their mark on this city.
The Roman’s regarded Frejus as strategically important, being the crossroads between Via Giulia Augusta and Via Domitia, two Roman roads that linked Italy to Spain and Italy to the Rhone. Julius Caesar officially founded the city as ‘Forum Julii’ – market of Julius.
Today you’ll find evidence of its history throughout the city, from the Amphitheatre, the aqueduct and theatre. There are also other clues of its past from the old walls, the three gates, mosaics in private properties and the sewers under today’s Rue Jean Jaures. Not to mention the ancient port, which was the focus of an archeological excavation in 2005.
The dig revealed an area of ancient rocks, which suggests that the coastline was nearly 1km back compared to today. In addition, it also revealed more details about the old Roman port. A Triton monument was discovered at the entrance to the port, along with the remains of one of three lighthouses that shone out to an ancient sea.
